Biography
Dr. Mario Roccuzzo MD, DDS Division of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Torino, Italy
Dr. Mario Roccuzzo is Lecturer in Periodontology and a member of the attending staff of the Division of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Torino, Italy.
He is an active member of the Italian Society of Periodontology and serves on the editorial board of Clinical Oral Implants Research, International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, and the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry.
He has been invited to lecture in more than 30 countries of all continents and maintains a private practice limited to Periodontology and Implantology in Torino.
Awarded for the best clinical presentation on implants in periodontally compromised patients at the 2009 EAO Congress in Montecarlo and for the best published research article on the same subject by the DGP (German Society of Periodontology) in 2010.
Winner of the 2013 Osteology Clinical Research Prize on Long-term stability of soft tissues around implants following ridge preservation.
Treatment alternatives: post-extraction implants and regenerative procedures
ABSTRACT:
Esthetics is an inseparable part of today’s oral treatment, and successful modern therapy can no longer be judged by whether or not the implant osseointegrates. One of the greatest challenges facing clinicians is to obtain a ideal soft tissue integration that mimics a perfect gingival contour.
This is particularly difficult in compromised sites, due to trauma, atrophy, periodontal disease and/or endodontic infection. A thorough diagnosis and a careful selection among various bone-grafting techniques and soft tissue augmentation procedures can, in most cases, produce good esthetic results. Ridge preservation, on the other hand, can often reduce or even eliminates the need for subsequent grafting.
Predictable results depend on the correct choice of the implant type, on the precise positioning of the implant shoulder and on a prosthetically determined implant axis. A decision making process will be applied to the treatment of defects in various areas of the mouth and different surgical approaches will be shown, step by step, based on the results of a recent 10-year study.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Evaluate hard and soft tissues to achieve optimal esthetic;
2. Identify the situations where ridge preservation is indicated;
3. Recognize when and how implants can be placed immediately after tooth extraction.
